In this article we announce Riga Citizens’ Climate Assembly kick-off. Translated from the original social media post from Zaļā brīvība reporting on the first CA meeting, which took place on September 21st.
Report
On the first day of assembly on September 21st 2024, the participants got to know each other, as well as plunged into the acquisition of new knowledge. Jānis Brizga, an environmental scientist and head of Zaļā brīvība (meaning “Green Liberty” in Latvian), talked about what climate change is, what has contributed to it in recent decades and whether there are any solutions at all to the current situation in which we already are. He also answered various questions from participants, including whether Latvia also emits and which sectors cause the most significant emissions.
In turn, Jānis Ušča, a representative of the Riga Municipal Strategic Management Board, presented the ideas and ideas of the Riga Greening Plan, which will include the recommendations developed by residents during the assembly.
During the day, the participants explored the diversity of Riga’s nature in the outdoor environment and gained additional insight into what the city’s residents and the municipality can do to improve the diversity of nature in the urban environment, listening to the narration of the botanist and author and leader of the project “City Meadows” Rūta Sniedze-Kretalova.
The day ended with an assessment, both individually and in groups. The residents of Riga, who participated on the first day of the assembly, were responsive, active and interested – thank you to everyone for this!
We look forward to the next meeting, the closest of which is on October 5.
